Notes from: Sunday April 1, 2012

arriving on island for distribution and building relationship with this remote community

soap and salt: ryan (GIVE director) and Lillian (GIVE staff)

local leaders organizing the distribution

always a dog around

Ben (GIVE Coordinator) giving instructions.  Distribution was well executed.  Many don't go nearly as smoothly.

these guys were eager to have their picture taken and wanted to receive a print.  little girl in a winter coat and nothing else

volunteer working: table set up and names being called from each household in the village

Pastor Timothy directing traffic and ensuring each family was represented

Michael: we brought him from an impoverished community in jinja.  we have become friends.  He is intoxicated most days but we made a deal that if he was sober we would take him along for the distribution and compensate him for his work.  He loved it.  As payment for his work we paid for a trip to the clinic and medication for a chest infection and open sores in his mouth.

very empowering for Michael to be able to contribute.

alcoholism is a huge problem amongst men in Uganda.  unemployment and loss of hope are barriers to achieving sobriety.  we will see if employing Michael in some of our projects will spark some hope.

Lillian is training to be a primary school teacher.  she is amazing with kids.  she can easily manage throngs of children in games and learning exercises.

wherever you go in Uganda there are hundreds of children.

leaving Nansu

Michael on the ride home.  He'd never been out to an island before.  He held on to the boat pretty good.

fishing with nets is main source of food supply on islands

Pastor Timothy's village

I take this shot everytime I pass Timothy's village.  My favourite shot.
